More than ever before, people expect the brands they support to have a clear stance on social causes. As consumers, our purchasing decisions are influenced beyond the product spec — we want to see and hear how brands are supporting the causes and missions we care most about. However, there are potential pitfalls to beware of as a brand. But when done right, brands can make a real difference to a movement they care about — while also building their brand identity and values.
This year has seen a rising trend of brands using their platforms to educate and inspire. Social media has been transformed from a place of simple inspiration and ideas sharing, to a vocal, thought-provoking space.

On a Wednesday evening, President and Mrs. Obama hosted a glamorous reception at the American Museum of Natural History. I sipped champagne, greeted foreign dignitaries, and mingled. But I could not stop thinking about my year-old son, who had started eighth grade three weeks earlier and was already resuming what had become his pattern of skipping homework, disrupting classes, failing math, and tuning out any adult who tried to reach him.
Over the summer, we had barely spoken to each other—or, more accurately, he had barely spoken to me. And the previous spring I had received several urgent phone calls—invariably on the day of an important meeting—that required me to take the first train from Washington, D. My husband, who has always done everything possible to support my career, took care of him and his year-old brother during the week; outside of those midweek emergencies, I came home only on weekends. As the evening wore on, I ran into a colleague who held a senior position in the White House.
I told her how difficult I was finding it to be away from my son when he clearly needed me. She was horrified. By the end of the evening, she had talked me out of it, but for the remainder of my stint in Washington, I was increasingly aware that the feminist beliefs on which I had built my entire career were shifting under my feet. I had always assumed that if I could get a foreign-policy job in the State Department or the White House while my party was in power, I would stay the course as long as I had the opportunity to do work I loved.
But in January , when my two-year public-service leave from Princeton University was up, I hurried home as fast as I could.

The right music helps set the scene, sparking emotions from the viewer, even telling a story all on its own, elevating our experience and bringing us into the world being shown before us. But some songs, whether specifically made for the movie or just perfectly added to an integral scene, seem to transcend the films they were featured in.
Others become inextricably linked to their films, becoming a part of pop culture history for generations to come. These are some of the most iconic movie songs of all time, in no particular order. These songs transcend decades and genres but are all unmistakably linked to the movies they’re featured in. Note: We did not include iconic movie scores, the instrumental music from a film, because those are honestly worthy of their own list.
The movie musical quickly became one of the biggest hits when it was released in , in no small part thanks to Loggins’ now-iconic song. It’s impossible not to dance when you hear it, which is probably why the song topped the charts for three weeks in a row on the US Billboard Hot , becoming such a massive hit that Loggins himself was blown away by its success. In , he revealed in an interview, “It became the biggest movie of the summer. We didn’t see it coming.
But I remember going to the premiere and watching the opening scene of the movie, … using ” Footloose ” the song over the dancing feet. Seal originally released the song in , but it hit icon status when it was featured on the “Batman Forever” soundtrack a year later, earning the singer three Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Isis , Egyptian Aset or Eset , one of the most important goddesses of ancient Egypt. Although initially an obscure goddess, Isis came to fulfill a variety of roles, primarily as wife and mother, mourner, and magical healer. She was a role model for women, was a principal deity in rites for the dead, and cured the sick. She also had strong links with the kingship and the pharaohs.
Occasionally, she was represented as a scorpion, a bird, a sow, or a cow.

When I was in second grade, we read a lovely Russian folktale about a lost peasant girl who is trying to find her mother. The villagers run over to help, asking the girl to describe her mother. So the villagers bring the girl the most beautiful women they can find and to each one the girl says, “No, she is not my mother. The message resonated with my then 7-year-old self: The mother is not beautiful to everyone but she is beautiful to her daughter.
To love is to see beauty. For years, I’ve remembered this tale and its lesson. It’s actually a retelling of a Russian folktale by Becky Reyher ; the dialogue above is mine, created from memory so the story as I remember it may differ from the book. Today, my 6-year-old son gazed up at me with sincere eyes and touched my face and my hair so tenderly and said, “beautiful.
He doesn’t see the up-past-midnight dark circles. He doesn’t see the ten pound weight gain. He loves me, so I am beautiful – to him. Remembering the folktale, I go out on a limb and ask my two sons the leading question, “Who is the most beautiful woman in the world? The most beautiful mom in the world has untamed hair, bags beneath her eyes and wears the same shirt for days on end.

I have a friend who dates only exceptionally attractive women. They are just really, notably good looking, standouts even in the kind of urban milieu where regular workouts and healthy eating are commonplace and an abundance of disposable income to spend on facials, waxing, straightening, and coloring keeps the average level of female attractiveness unusually high.
For years, I assumed that it was just his good fortune that the women he felt an emotional connection with all happened to be so damn hot. Over time, however, I came to realize that my friend, nice as he is, prizes extreme beauty above all the other desiderata that one might seek in a partner. I have another friend who broke up with a woman because her body, though fit, was the wrong type for him. Some people would say these men are fatally shallow. Those in the first camp would probably say that my friends are outliers—uniquely immature men to be avoided.
Many in the second camp argue that, in fact, all men would be like the man who dates only beautiful women, if only they enjoyed his ability to snare such knockouts. In my experience, people on both sides are emphatic, and treat their position as if it is obvious and incontrovertible. To me, these stories highlight the intense and often guilty relationship that many men have with female beauty, a subject with profound repercussions for both men and women.
But, in fact, many novels fail to meaningfully address the issue of beauty. Their good looks are like a convenient afterthought. This is, unfortunately, sentimental: how we wish life were, rather than how it is.
