Culture Buro Loves. Welcome back this week’s download. Some of you reached out to me last week and asked for the column, and you were right to notice, there wasn’t one. Last week was one of the most profound and moving in our modern history — certainly in my lifetime — and I know I was moved greatly. The protests and coverage around the BlackLivesMatter movement has had a fundamentally positive impact on educating people worldwide on a topic that is so pertinent and important and it did not feel right to post a column in a week where I really wanted every ounce of coverage to be about the cause being championed.
I am and have always been a huge proponent of equality be it men, women, race, caste, creed, and I passionately support BlackLivesMatter. So as a sign of respect, the column took a break. I highly encourage everyone to research, read and participate positively in this movement and better understand the historic and future implications of the cause and how we can all play a role. If you need any guidance on resources, please feel free to reach out to me via my Instagram handle.
She told me she’d stumbled across my column from the social media pushes I hound you, but it’s worth it! She kept describing a number of weird characters she’d run into and a pattern she was observing, and so much of what she was describing felt like my own experiences and stories. It was like all of us knew these personas people put on when they hop on for online dating.
And no matter where you are in the world she lives in Australia , they seem to be exactly the same.

Arranged marriages in India see parents leading efforts to find a suitable match for their children. The show has become a subject of memes, jokes and criticism – on how individuals and their parents are picky and have a long list of demands that centre on factors such as caste, height and skin colour.

Her track record includes successfully aiding more than CEOs, doctors, lawyers, and bankers to find happy marriages. And she promises that as “Asia’s ultimate matchmaker to millionaires”, she can find your marrying mate from her personal black book. But as you can imagine, matching high-flying and high net worth individuals does come with its sets of unique challenges, as seen on the recently released Netflix series, Indian Matchmaking. If you’re only looking to be set up for a date though, the services that Anisa provides at Date High Flyers might not be the right one.
She only works with those who are committed to marriage and finding a life partner, not unlike Sima Taparia in the series. The difference though is that while you see whole families get involved in the matchmaking process from the start in the TV series, for Anisa, the request from parents to get a match for their child has happened, but not more than a handful of times. The families do sometimes get involved later, though. Getting to know the client is something that Anisa does as well, and it’s an important part of the process for her.
But that’s as far as the similarities go. Instead, Anisa usually spends time speaking to them in person at a cafe, hotel lobby or other public areas. And during this conversation, which lasts an hour or two, “it’s about understanding them and their needs”, she shares, adding: “It’s important for clients to resonate with you. However, just like how some of the clients featured on the show have a laundry list of requirements, Anisa too has similar clients.

Find love that lasts a lifetime.
The rising proportion of singles in several East and South-east Asian countries and the related concerns of low fertility have resulted in policy makers in the region introducing state sponsored matchmaking services to help singles enter the nuptial phase. In this paper, the case of Singapore is discussed with particular reference to the hesitation of singles to use such marriage intermediaries. Using a qualitative approach involving 83 single Singaporeans of different ethnic and social backgrounds, the aversion to commodification in the mate selection process, the lack of authenticity and spontaneity that ensues from finding matches through commercial services, and the concern that agencies do not provide quality singles are identified as potential barriers to the use of matchmaking services.
Possibly the early involvement of the state in promoting such matchmaking services is being resisted by singles who are averse to subjugating their freedom to pursue the spontaneity of romantic love for the pragmatism of matchmaking.
